Albert A. Major, II Back

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Albert A. Major,II for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions whle serving aboard helicopter gunships defending the Tay Ninh Base Camp during an enemy sapper and ground attack. The enemy was attempting to penetrate the perimeter at five different locations using recoilless rifles, mortars, rocket launchers and heavy automatic weapons fire. With complete disregard for their safety, they scrambled their gunships and delivered heavy, acurate aerial rocket fire against the enemy positions, despite intense small arms fire being fired at their aircraft on each pass. After expending their ammunition, they landed at the re-arm point there, while re-arming the aircraft, the attack was renewed and the point began receiving heavy rocket fire, as the enemy attempted to breach the bunker line just seventy-five meters away. Completely ignoring the incoming rockets, they redoubled their efforts and were soon airborne again, engaging the enemy with maximum suppressive fire, again completely expending his ammuntion. Their courageous performance under fire was instrumental to the successful defense of the beleaguered outpost. Their actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States Army.
