Thomas J. McGrath Back

1) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas J. McGrath for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 22 October 1971. On that date, Captain McGrath piloted his lightly armed reconnaissance aircraft in support of a small friendly unit which was under attack by a well-entrenched hostile force. Despite intense ground fire and marginal weather conditions, Captain McGrath directed tactical fighters onto the aggressors’ position thereby breaking the conflict and enabling friendly helicopters to extract the unit without a casualty. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain McGrath reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. 2) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas J. McGrath for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in western Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 19 February 1972. On that date, while piloting his lightly armed 0-2A reconnaissance aircraft, Captain McGrath was serving as On-Scene Commander for the helicopter insertion of a long-range intelligence patrol when the unit came under attack by a numerically superior hostile force deep within the aggressors’ base camp area. Although hampered by intense ground fire and extremely poor weather conditions, Captain McGrath, with complete disregard for his personal safety, expended his own internal ordnance and directed helicopter gunships onto the hostile positions, thereby breaking the conflict and permitting the successful helicopter extraction of the entire patrol. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain McGrath reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
