quote: Comprehensive boycott of BP needed
To the editor:
How long do we need to wait for someone to call for a comprehensive boycott of everything owned by British Petroleum (BP)? It may be that I come from a generation that exercised their rights in a more open and damaging way. Apparently, the only way that BP will pay attention to those of us who care about the wetlands of south Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi is by having all of us damage their bottom line.
It may take some time. Things like this usually do. The right things. Since our own government is so impotent when it comes to international corporations, it has to be left to us ... the people ... the consumers of the product that we know is so bad for us in every way. I am hoping to begin something that should have been done right after Arab Oil Embargo of the mid-70s. I am hoping that I might be able to call upon peoples patriotism, willingness to do whats right, and a chance that will, in the long run, cost us all more money.
For the most part, the damage is done to the Gulf of Mexico. Its time for us to do some damage of our own. I would like to see Mr. Cheney under oath, in front of a house committee, telling us all something that never occurred to him to tell us ... the truth. The truth about what really went on when he and his fellow oil company shills created our current energy policy. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no chance that it would ever happen.
Please consider what I propose. Your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will thank you.

Bob I have a few questions to ask about your boycott proposal.
- Wouldn't a boycott to BP do more harm to the people who own and work for the BP stations?
- Wouldn't a boycott to BP take away money and resources needed to do the clean up?
- Wouldn't a boycott to BP take away money and resources needed to compensate those affected by the environmental damage?

1) The owners can easily switch to paying royalties to a different oil company. The crap about hurting local business doesn't wash. I imagine that Speedway would like another station.
2)Take away money? You're kidding, right? BP had more cash on hand than most corporations in the world. $6-$9 billion IN CASH!!! They stood ready to pay a dividend of $10B for the first quarter of of this year alone. God help the executives that don't get their multi-million dollar bonuses. The ONLY way to penalize the top guys is by monetary fine. The way to penalize the guys who made the decisions the caused this nightmare is jail.
3)This afternoon the President met with the sleazy SOB's from BP, and they essentially wrote a $20B check. If it were up to me, ALL the oil corporations would create an environmental damages money pool, somewhere between $100B-$150B to be used whenever their negligence causes damage such as this.
The feedback that I got for this was, for the most part, highly supportive for a boycott, with many of the people already engaged in their own boycott. |

I have heard that there has been a measurable impact on the independent owners since this started so I can believe that many are engaged in their own boycotts.

I now only shop at BP.
They've done more for job creation than obama has.
