Transit tax heads to St. Joe voters

St. Joseph County voters in August will get a request to renew for four years a 0.33-mill property tax originally approved in 2007.

The tax generates $583,000, about 45 percent of the St. Joseph County Transportation Authority's $1.3 million budget, said the authority's executive director, Steve Yorks. It is set to expire next year.

Members of the authority board said renewal of the tax is critical to maintaining transit operations at their current level. In addition to dial-a-ride service throughout the county, the authority operates weekday circle routes in Sturgis and Three Rivers. Circle-route passengers pay $1 and may board and exit anywhere along the established route. The cost for dial-a-ride service is $8 one way, and $4 one way for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

Yorks said that without funds generated by the property tax, the Three Rivers-based agency would probably have only enough money to honor contracts with various county agencies, including Community Mental Health Read More - MLive

Here we go again.

I just have 1 question: Do you ever see anyone on those buses? I know there are a few people who ride, but is it enough to constitute it being a government run program?

I have seen one person on the bus once. Otherwise it has always been empty when I see it go by. What a waste of tax payer monies.

I just noticed that I asked 2 questions. LOL

Buck, that is what I have noticed also. I have made it a point to look for passengers on the CTA buses. There are very few people who actually ride the things.
There is a bigger picture here. It's not just some country folks trying to do a good thing for the elderly or the mentally challenged. There is a big push from the federal and state governments to provide public transportation. Some tree hugger in Washington who has never spent a day in a rural community wants to have everyone ride their bike on a trail system or take the bus. No more individual cars is the goal.
I'm not making this up. I watched a meeting where they were talking about this type of thing. It was in Michigan, it was just this year. The clarifying point for me was the guy speaking was from Amtrak, the broker than broke transportation system held up by tax payer dollars. They couldn't make a profit if they tried and neither will CTA.
I'm more than positive that the peeps running the CTA are getting their batteries charged by the same people I heard pushing for this stuff just a couple months ago.

I wonder if there has ever been a study done to see how much driving each one of us must do every day to equal the "environmental impact" that empty bus does each day.

By the way this subject came up on this forum in 2007 in this thread Do you want to fund the SJC Transportation Auth?. I said then that it should be a privately funded enterprise. And I now believe, even more then I did then, that to have it otherwise is a complete waste of tax payer money.

I was in the minority, on this forum, then. I wonder if that is still true today?
