Lockport...you may have unintentionally reinforced the reasons for my initial questions (which were not intended to indicate in any way, shape or form any negative implications with respect to this particular dog's previous police companion).
But again are police dogs "viewed" more than not by the agency (which has guardianship over them)far more as an inanimate object when it comes to the "bottom line" or are they considered far more as a real member of the police force i.e. as a living/breathing/feeling being?
I think the reason my initial questions were generated was because of what I indirectly inferred/perceived/detected when reading (perhaps between the lines) the initial announcement/statement regarding Anjia's death which was issued by the prosecutor.
I see what you mean, but what my intention was it to point out the cost-effectiveness of a K-9. As far as perception, from what some officers have told me, their dogs view daily activities (and work) as play, with a reward when they are done. Dogs like to please people, and the bond between handler and dog makes that all the more possible. Tom Hicks and Matt Stark are two outstanding officers who make the most of their K-9 partner's abilities. You have to have a connection with a dog to make that happen. It takes a bunch of training and constant practice for those guys, which makes the K-9 handler's job a lot more than just what is on the clock.
Also I second what TR Hunter just posted as well. |

Hunter and Lockport, You present great information and support which is appreciated.
The cost, medical , and training was not paid for by the city. That is not the point of the fund raiser. The effort to replace Anjia is not a decision to use tax dollars or line items. It is a donation based fund raiser. If someone chooses not to donate, that is their choice. Many will do what they can to help this program because it makes us all safer. a department K-9 is a MEMBER of the police force. To those that serve alongside them, they feel a connection just as strong as they do their own animal companions.
We are fortunate to have officers that rally together for causes that benefit the community, and this is one of them.
An enormous amount of work was done to make Anjia's addition possible and I support the people that made that happen for our community.
I WILL be supporting the fundraiser, and that is MY choice. |

My two cents....don't think i've ever seen anyone get away from an attack dog. Anyone stupid enough to break the law deserves to be bitten in the @$$ (for lack of better words).
I totally support the fundraising for another dog. I hope to see buckets on every merchants counter in TR....guaranteed that for every one i see, i'll be placing my money in there !! |

Takeastand Quote I totally support the fundraising for another dog.
I second that!! Our Police Department is always trying to do more with less due to cuts in their department. We need a K-9 unit so I will be supporting this fundraiser and enjoying a spaghetti dinner. I would encourage ALL to do the same !! |

The event was a HUGE success. The community support we saw at this outing was great. Thanks to TRFD, Sheriff's Dept., and Animal Control for helping TRPD in the less that tropical weather. Thanks also go out to Paisano's restaurant for the warm refreshments.
The next event is Friday 10/23 in Constantine for the Spaghetti dinner. |
