I have reserved my judgment about this matter because I assume parents are trying to do the best for a child, but the part about not hugging her and not feeding her--a KINDERGARTENER--for forgetting her lunch...well, it's chilling. What angry people.

What community mental health training advocates restraining a child to the bed in their policy and procedure manuals? I have a feeling that more than just this family is going to be on trial for this death, I think a lot of people hold accountablility in this death and I hope the truth is exposed for what services are being rendered in this county, perhaps it is time for some new leadership, new ideas, and new direction for some community agencies.

CMH and CPS should be the ones on trial. The parents were way out of line, but just the fact that these 2 agencies didn't help this little girl when they had the chance says that they are incompetent. I'm in no way condoning what these parents did. It was wrong. BUT Listen to me, There is such a thing as reactive attachment disorder (RAD). I'm reading the paper and screaming this little girl had some degree of RAD. These parents needed help. Counseling a RAD kid is extremely expensive, time consuming and not for the faint of heart. She may even have needed inpatient therapy which is as much at $40,000/ year from a source I have. These parents need to be punished and that they are, but please don't be so ready to have them hanging by a noose before you learn about RAD or have walked in their shoes. I could be wrong. But I'm pretty sure that these parents didn't know what they were dealing with as far as the emotional illness this little girl had and I think they were hung out to dry long before Calista died. Talk to any parent with adopted children or kids who were neglected as babies by one parent of the other. Most often times the mother. Could be something as little as hospitalization after birth or outright neglect. You'll get a lesson on attachment disorders. (Unless they are using CMH to deal with their kids. In that case they just have them drugged up.)

I don't care what kind of disorder they say this child had, you'll note that there was a marked difference in how they treated one child over the other two. There has been no talk of abuse to the other two girls in the family, so the parents were WELL aware of what was suitable parental treatment. IF they didn't love or like the child, they had OPTIONS for many years prior to her death. They and the local child protection services are fully culpable for this child's horrendous death.

Ultimately the agencies set up to protect Calista failed her big time. The people in those agencies have really no excuses for failing her. While her parents' are afforded their rights to the max, Calista was not afforded that option.
Now that being said, the father should have protected his own flesh and blood with his life from his wife. Ultimately the stepmother as a mother should have taken care of her. All these people are responsible for her death but I hope that there will be justice for Calista.
It is to bad that the parents won't get the punishment they truly deserve and at best they may only get jail time. I hope that the agencies that fail her will be forced to look at this child death and change their ways.

Channel 8 has reported a possible deadlock from the jury....
I enjoyed the article in the Sturgis Journal yesterday when Judy West-Wing commented on the cost to the county. Is she the one who approved the $200 per night hotel stays at the Radisson for Mr. McDonough? Is she the one who approved the expensive meals each night Mr. McDonough stayed in Kalamazoo? While I believe the Springer's are guilty, as a tax paying citizen I am a little concerned that unnecessary tax money has been spent to make Mr. McDonough comfortable...... |

It's so much easier to be frivolous when it's not your money. The Holiday Inn should suffice--it's just a place to sleep!

Well, if we could have gotten an objective jury in St. Joseph County, instead of the usual 'point the finger and you're guilty crowd' that live here, there wouldn't have been additional costs, since everyone could've stayed home at night. Oh, sorry, then there wouldn't have been any reason to government bash again!
